1/1/2024 0 Comments Ohm studio spekersI had, until this point, felt that the speakers preferred AAD and ADD recording to anything digitally originated, but further listening to contemporary recordings proved me wrong. Beginning with Schubert’s dramatic and searching Piano Trio No.2 in E-Flat Major (D929) on Erato from 2007, the immense HF detail that the album reveals came through with clarity and conviction via the Rogers speakers with the BBC design’s rising treble response adding weight and sparkle to the performance. The following day it was the turn of music streamed, via the Hegel, from my own collection. This may be an ageing design but it has stood the test of time remarkably well. After a very short while I became accustomed to that pronounced HF response which did reveal some sibilance on poorly recorded material that other speakers would merely mask with their lacklustre treble response. The LS3/5A’s pronounced peak at around 1.2kHz came into its own here as the vocals were projected well into the room with the rest of the performers placed behind in a most believable way. The soundstage was wide, well beyond the confines of the cabinets, with plenty of depth and adequate height as well to fully enjoy the cantabile and cabaletta arias. These themes can be found when the UI Refresh has been enabled and can be accessed either from the Tools > Theme or from the “color theme” combobox under Environment > Visual Experience in Tools\Options. These tinted themes are inspired by Microsoft Edge and give Visual Studio a new, fresh look beyond the simple Light and Dark that have been the mainstay for the last decade. We’re calling these the new “Tinted” themes, and you can take a look at these below. One of the benefits of streamlining the color service is that we can provide a fresher set of color themes beyond the basic “Dark” and “Light”. We’re working on both issues, so stay tuned and we’ll update as we make progress. We’re also aware that 3 rd party themes may run into similar complications, so those may not work as expected with the UI Refresh yet. Our current blue theme has some compatibility issues that we couldn’t iron out in time for Ignite, and instead of delaying this preview, we’ve had to make the decision to make it unavailable for now. This is leading to more consistency, and we believe will result in the cohesive experience that will make Visual Studio more comfortable to use. The new refreshed styles use only about one hundred tokens, which may still seem like a lot, but are much easier to maintain and will make it easier to spot incorrect use. This frequently led to inconsistent experiences, accessibility issues and many other issues that led to an experience that didn’t feel cohesive. Styles across Visual Studio before the UI Refresh used over 4,000 color tokens which were difficult to maintain and were easily misused. For the Visual Studio UI Refresh, this has been most evident in the simplification of the colors that we use in Visual Studio. Hazel can run shortcuts when you add files to a folder, so I set up a very basic automation that checks for new files added to my downloads folder with extensions. The shortcut is called “Convert to JPEG” ( download here) and all it does is accept whatever image file you give it and convert it to (you guessed it) a JPEG. I’ve solved this problem elegantly and automatically using Hazel and Shortcuts. We’re all like, “just send a JPG, it works,” and we all know it. We’re not going to get that advanced today, but I wanted to share some practical uses for Hazel that I’ve found really helpful in my day-to-day life. There are even people who use Hazel to OCR their invoices and file them away based on the contents of those invoices…it gets pretty advanced if you want it to. Hazel can flag files, show system notifications, move things around, and even run AppleScripts to extend things even further. If you aren’t familiar with Hazel, the general idea of the app is that you can set it up to watch specific folders on your Mac and perform actions based on what files are in those folders. I’ve personally just started using it regularly, and wanted to share some of the things that make it an essential part of my Mac workflows. Released in 2006, this Mac automation tool is still consistently updated and is insanely useful. Hazel is one of those all-time great apps, though. But few apps elevate themselves to “all time great” status, to the point where they feel almost like they’re a core part of macOS. It’s a rich and vibrant ecosystem unique to the Mac, and we’re lucky to have it.
